Before the chaos unfolds we see his struggle; to keep his wife, to see his children, to have possibly his last Christmas with them as a family. We already like him before he starts fighting the bad guys and saving the day.

That's what a good protagonist looks like.

They are usually flawed in some way, just like us, and their struggle to make it through the story that unfolds is what makes them relatable. But it's not quite as simple as just making them the same as us; they have to save the day in a way that's not too easy, their character has to act and react in a way that still makes us like them at the end.

Batman never kills the baddies. That's his thing. He could be completely unrelatable; he is a billionaire with all the tech and gadgets, after all. Not many of us have a mansion and all-singing-all dancing car. But he has a heart. And we love him for it.

We may not always agree with the actions our beloved protagonists take, but we must want them to succeed, because there's something about them that we like. It is their actions that drive the story after all, their problems that need to be solved.

John Mclane had to act because his wife was being held hostage. If she wasn't there, he might still have saved the day, but he would have had nothing to lose. He did it all for her, and we all like to believe we would fight off terrorists and Hans Gruber for the ones we love, so we relate to him more.

Our protagonists know what they want, and they drive the story from beginning to end just to get it, stopping at nothing to achieve their goal. I don't know about you, but I think I definitely need to be a bit more of a protagonist!
North Cumbria Scriptwritershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01641049175919832896noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5437620021283487067.post-11807597970680598612023-02-25T13:42:00.007+00:002023-02-25T13:44:53.694+00:00NEW WRITER? Is it the right word? Is it a good start? What's my second word going to be?

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">It all starts with an idea. Whether a fully formed story, or a half-baked thought stream which you hope might blossom into something magnificent. But how do you turn that idea into a script that can be staged? Well, here's a few tips this writer has found useful over the years - and you might too.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">1. Write your idea down.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">Don't dive right into the script part straight away. Jot down your idea. who are your characters? who is your main character? What do they want to achieve in the short amount of time that we will know them? They've always got to have a goal, that's what drives the story forward; it's what we as the audience are hoping that they achieve.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">2. Pace out your story.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">What is going to happen at the start, in the middle and at the end? Quite a lot of Pixar films start out in the same way for example; the hero is going about their normal business, then out of nowhere, their lives change and their journey begins.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #121212; font-family: "GH Guardian Headline", "Guardian Egyptian Web", Georgia, serif; font-size: 17px; font-variant-ligatures: common-ligatures;">But then what? We need things to happen to this character to show us what kind of person they are - are they brave, foolish, or creative? When things start to get difficult for them (as things should in any good story) how will they react and get themselves through?

How will it end? You ought to have at least a bit of an idea where you are going with the story, and where it might end. Will your character achieve their goal? Will it be a happy or sad (or ambiguous) ending? Knowing where you'll end up keeps your writing focussed and stops you deviating too much from the main story. Of course if you get halfway through and realise you want to end a different way, then go ahead, we all love a twist!

3. Start writing

Eventually you'll have to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboards, and start writing. My advice is just to write. don't stop and correct your mistakes, just go for it. let the story flow out and don't think about it too much. That's what editing is for. This time is for raw ideas flowing out in whatever order they occur to you. get yourself a quiet room with minimal interruptions and let go!

4. Keep writing

After a while, you might notice steam coming from your ears or your fingers hurting like they've run a marathon. This is all perfectly normal writer stuff. Make yourself a cuppa and CARRY ON! it might be tempting at this point to re-read what you've done and get disheartened that you think it isn't any good. DON'T DO IT! Just keep writing. you can correct any errors later on. You know what you can't correct? A BLANK PAGE!

5. When you've finished writing, stop.

THE END.

Phew, you've made it to the end. Your character has completed their journey. You've laughed, you've cried and you've somehow lost a whole day somewhere.

Now's the time to get up, take a stretch, and walk away.

Let the dust settle. Then, when you've totally forgotten about it, read your play through again with fresh eyes. You might notice things that need changing or spelling mistakes you made. Read it to someone else. See what they think. Edit and amend until you have a polished script.

6. If you are thinking of entering, can you please let Carol know by email, phone or post?
We were hoping to provide a template of a suggested format that you could feed your script into. Unfortunately, we find we do not have the technology to do so on this blog. But if you would like a sample of an accepted format, please email conjensen@trifolium.co.uk and Connie Jensen will send you a relevant sample. You can then delete Connie's content and paste in your own.
If this last is not possible, please at least make sure that your entry is typed (i.e. not hand written), with speech and stage directions clearly distinguished, as explained in the instructions in the 'Format of Scripts' paragraph below.

Ten Plays for Ten Years
To mark our 10th Anniversary, we cooperated with BBC Radio Cumbria to broadcast five, five-minute radio plays written by our members plus one which was to be the winner of a public competition, judged by Radio Cumbria.
We were surprised at the number of entries and delighted with the quality of the writing, but of course there could be only one winner.
This was Mr Robert Armitage from Ambleside, with his piece, 'Cultivating Cumbria'.
We recorded this piece with the help of our friends at Radio Cumbria, for inclusion on a CD of our work. Some of the pieces were selected for broadcast on Radio Cumbria during one winter week.
Due to its success, this became an annual event until 2014. Our thanks to Radio Cumbria and to Rick Thomas for hosting the recordings.

Write Angles
With Arts Council and Allerdale Council funding, Write Angles 2008 started as workshops with professional directors and writers, and a public competition. These led to script-in-hand performances of works in progress by our members and the competition winner. These were directed by Daniel Bye of the Silvertongue Theatre in York and our own Ian Hinde.
The scripts were read/acted by local amateur actors. The audience, actors and directors were invited to discuss each piece with a view to ways to develop it further. A format emerged and the second and third performances were arranged to include four pieces about 15 minutes long, each immediately followed by discussion. This resulted in many useful ideas and was enjoyed by all who took part.
In April and June, the performances were at Theatre by the Lake in the Studio. In November it was at the Penrith Playhouse.

Workshop
A script-writing workshop at Bowness on Solway Literary Festival, on ways to extend a script, was also a success.

A Blessed Release
This play by Martin Chambers, was performed by the Black Sheep Theatre Group as part of the Cumbria Darma Festival 2008, on 15 March in Grange over Sands.
2003

Mighty Oak
NCS member Martin Chambers was commissioned by the Nation Trust to write a play about Hardewicke Drummond Rawnsley, one of the founders of the Nation Trust. It was performed in the open air by the Keswick Theatre Club as part of the celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the acquisition by the Trust of Brandlehowe Park.

Acting Workshop
Led by Stefan Escreet and held in the Studio at Theatre by the Lake, the aim was to help writers to write for performance.

North Cumbria Scriptwriters and Penrith Players have worked together successfully on several occasions and we were thrilled to be invited to take part in 'Penrith Players' Monologue Festival'.
The plays, entitled 'One Voice', were produced at Penrith Players' Theatre at the end of August and the festival was a great success.
Visit Penrith Players at: http://www.penrithplayers.co.uk

In 2012, the market town of Wigton celebrated the 750th anniversary of the granting of its Market Charter.
Six of our members worked together on a script covering the major events in Wigton since 1262. This was our first attempt at team writing so we had lots to learn. The project proved worthwhile and we were delighted to have the play, entitled 'The Throstle's Nest', performed by Wigton Theatre Group at the John Peel Theatre, Wigton, in June.
Visit John Peel Theatre Group at: http://www.wigtontheatre.org

As this was the first time we had worked together on a play and because we found it so rewarding, Connie thought it would be interesting to share the experience with others. Follow the link to see what she had to say: http://conswords.blogspot.co.uk
Welcome to North Cumbria Scriptwriters!

[This is our new on line presence. The original webpage at www.northcumbriascriptwriters.co.uk will disappear from the end of December 2015.]

We are a group of writers with a serious commitment to writing for performance on stage, screen and radio.

We are associated with the Theatre By The Lake (TBTL) in Keswick, Cumbria, UK.

Our members pay a small annual subscription and we meet on the last Thursday of the month (except December) usually at the Theatre by the Lake, but occasionally at other venues, for instance The Penrith Players Theatre.
